David Heinemeier Hansson on REWORK

One-way Doors

Host Aug 26, 2026 · 19 min

The revelation that David and Jason seriously considered buying Bezos back out is genuinely fresh, especially because the motivation was aesthetic rather than operational. Beyond that, the case for gut decisions, experimentation, and letting reality judge substantially repeats recent REWORK appearances, so sampling the Bezos section may be enough.

In fact, I think 10 years ago, Jason and I seriously thought about, should we go back on it? (05:11): Should we buy Bezos back out of the business? Because we could have done it. And ultimately it just didn’t matter enough. The attraction to that idea was almost purely aesthetical. What if just the cap tables were just to the two of us again, would that not look nice or feel nice? It was not because we were like, “Oh my God, Jeff, keep your nose out of our business.” That was never the thing.
from this episode

David Heinemeier Hansson participates extensively in this episode, discussing why the Bezos investment was a rare consequential decision and why most business decisions should be made quickly. He argues that companies should optimize the cumulative effect of many decisions, use reality as feedback, and act when persistent stagnation signals that a change is needed.
