Sam Altman: "Never a Better Time to Do a Startup"
Much of the founder-ambition framing overlaps Garry’s recent appearances, but Sam Altman’s unusually specific forecast that six months could equal two years of model progress makes this timely and worth hearing. The exchanges on OpenAI’s once-marginal conviction and finding a small circle of believers add substance beyond the standard “start now” message.
I guess I would be remiss in uh asking you know what alpha leak can you give us about what's the latest about what you know how much more awesome are the models going to be to the extent you can say I think there will I think it will feel like the next six months is like maybe equivalent to the last two years of model progress something like that so I think we'll go through like a very steep uh we'll go through like a very steep period which again never a better time to do a startup than right now. I hope we can say that again every year from now on, but it's certainly true about this to any moment in history.
Garry Tan contributes substantive framing throughout the interview, focusing on how AI changes startup ambition, founder networks, hard-tech entry, and the responsibilities surrounding safety and power. His questions consistently set up Sam Altman's answers on unconventional conviction, rapid model progress, and the unusually favorable timing for new companies.
